Why sightings are seasonal
Whale sharks are filter feeders that follow plankton blooms and fish-spawning events. These pulses of food move around the ocean on a calendar, so whale sharks tend to appear at a site during a predictable window, then move on. Get the season right and your chances climb dramatically.
Where they gather
Aggregations happen at a handful of well-known feeding grounds — along continental shelves and near reefs where upwelling pushes food to the surface. How to be a good guest
Whale sharks are wild and easily stressed. Swim beside them, never above or in front of their path, keep your distance, and never touch. Many operators now require you to stay well clear of the animal and to avoid flash photography. A respectful encounter is a sustainable one.
